Thank you to the community gardeners, sponsors, partners, and neighbors who made the 3rd annual Community Gardens Day on June 18, 2016, a tremendous success. It was a day of celebration and blue skies for community gardens. The citywide event also highlighted the importance of protecting these shared open spaces which bring so many social, health, and environmental benefits to our neighborhoods. Over 40 gardens across Philadelphia welcomed in visitors, offering opportunities to explore, get gardening advice, watch demonstrations and more. Participants enjoyed trolley, bike and walking tours provided in partnership with Hidden City Philadelphia and the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program.
Scott Sheely, Special Assistant to Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell C. Redding presented NGT with a State Commendation for its promotion of community gardening throughout Philadelphia. NGT, along with PHS and the gardeners celebrated with Councilwoman Maria Quiñones-Sánchez’s staff important new legislation that creates a stormwater fee exemption for community gardens.
